I wonder if this has more to do with Harvard's sabbatical rules...I think to stay on academic track there you can only take limited time off...

Yep, looks like only a year...this if from the School of Public Health, but it's probbly similar across the different disciplines...

Although I can't blame him, it is a tough position to be in, especially in the current climate...
